US TikTok Ban Bill Gains Momentum, Biden Open to Signing

01:03 09.03.2024

President Biden has announced his willingness to sign legislation that could potentially lead to a ban on the popular video-sharing app TikTok, owned by China-based company ByteDance. The bill, known as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, would require ByteDance to sell TikTok within six months or face being banned from U.S. app stores and web-hosting services. The legislation has been swiftly moving through the House, with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise planning for a vote on the floor next week.

The Justice Department has outlined the dangers it believes TikTok poses, including the collection of sensitive data and the potential for the Chinese government to carry out influence campaigns. National security officials and lawmakers have long expressed concerns about the app being used for spying or spreading misinformation. TikTok, in response, has denied sharing U.S. user data with Chinese authorities and has pushed back against claims of being a tool for the Chinese government.

This latest move comes after former President Donald Trump's attempt to ban TikTok through an executive order in 2020, which was blocked by the courts. The Biden administration has revoked that order but continues to review the platform through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. The White House has acknowledged that the review is ongoing.

Efforts to enact nationwide bans on TikTok have faced opposition from influencers, small businesses, and digital rights groups who argue that a ban would violate free speech rights and impact Americans who rely on the app for information and entertainment. TikTok itself has urged users to contact their representatives to oppose the legislation, framing it as a "TikTok shutdown."

As the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance, the debate over national security concerns, free speech rights, and the influence of foreign-owned social media platforms continues to intensify. President Biden's willingness to sign the legislation signals a potential turning point in the ongoing saga of TikTok's presence in the United States.
